In November of 2012, over one hundred people squeezed into every nook and cranny of the Caledonia Golf and Fish Club to consider planting a new worshiping community in Pawleys Island. Decades of mission and ministry experience in the community together, alongside a desire for a three streams worship experience brought them out on a chilly winter evening. Intimate worship warmed their spirits and fueled faith into action. The gathering was the first seed planted in the soil of a dream now rooted and growing steady in The Abbey.
A few weeks after that initial gathering, twenty-nine of those friends turned leaders elected the Rt. Rev. Charles H. Murphy, III to lead us in the pilgrimage towards planting. Murphy, a long-time friend and resident of Pawleys Island accepted the call as Rector of The Abbey after retirement as Apostolic Vicar of The Anglican Mission in the America’s (The Mission).
The Mission is a society modeled after the Celtic way of evangelism, planting churches toward the Great Commission throughout North America. With longevity as a lead pastor in numerous congregations as well as oversight of 263 church plants over 12 years through The Mission, The Abbey is birthed with strong leadership in Bishop Murphy.
Pooling twenty-two years of friendship and the intersections of national ministry with Bishop Murphy, Stu Boehmig joined The Abbey as Associate Rector in 2013. Stu brings energy for mission and leadership experience as the founding pastor of Orchard Hill Church, a mega congregation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Today, deeply rooted in the ministry of the apostles, The Abbey blends contemporary and traditional elements in worship and expression, building an ancient-future Christian community relevant for all ages.
As the community continues growing sturdy, we envision a future evolution as a teaching and retreat center with branches that Explain beliefs, Explore the power of the Gospel, Expect a move of the Holy Spirit, Experience the power of ministries and Extend the Kingdom.
Join us on the pilgrimage of faith through a Sunday worship experience, vibrant children’s ministry, small group discipleship and continuous outreach throughout the Pawleys Island community. Every person matters and you belong around the communion table at The Abbey.
